If you want to make the world a cleaner place, then you should be in Edmonton. Every day more than 10,650 people who work in the region’s environmental sector make real, positive contributions to the environment. Research and development at more than 25 centres, supported by federal, provincial and corporate funding includes:

• The CanmetENERGY Research Centre in Devon has made possible huge reductions in the emissions of greenhouse gases, water consumption and other impacts of energy production.
• Alberta’s $2 billion commitment to Canada’s first large-scale carbon capture and storage projects includes the development of four CCS projects in the Edmonton region.
• The Canadian Centre for Clean Coal/Carbon and Mineral Processing Technologies (C5MPT)at the U of A focuses on clean coal, water-based oil sands extraction, mineral processing and carbon capture.
• The Sherwood Park-based Climate Change and Emissions Management Corp. uses money collected as Alberta’s $15 per tonne carbon tax to fund dozens of research projects aimed at deploying practical responses to global warming.
• The City of Edmonton is a leader in keeping our garbage out of the dump. Soon, 90% of our household solid waste will be recycled into saleable products. When it opens in 2014, the world’s first industrial-scale municipal waste-to-biofuels facility will produce 36 million litres of biofuels annually—the equivalent of removing 42,000 cars from the roads each year.
• Syncrude Research at Edmonton Research Park is pioneering the creation of fen wetlands as part of oil sands reclamation. The first reclaimed oil sands tailings pond is now a 220-hectare (544-acre) mixed forest and wetland.
• Edmonton-based Nelson Environmental Remediation Ltd. uses mobile thermal soil remediation technology to separate contaminants from soils.
• Groundwater remediation researchers at the U of A School of Energy and the Environment are studying the use of bacteria to decontaminate groundwater
