Shaw Conference Centre appoints new GM
Cliff Higuchi takes over from retiring Mike Fitzpatrick
Edmonton (June 23, 2011) — Cliff Higuchi is the new vice-president and general manager of Shaw Conference Centre effective June 27. Higuchi takes over from Mike Fitzpatrick, who retires on June 24.
“What an honour and privilege it is to lead an outstanding team and landmark facility,” says Higuchi about his appointment. “I am excited about the future of the Shaw Conference Centre.”
Assistant general manager at the centre since 1993, Higuchi previously held client service positions and has been in the hospitality industry for 33 years. Higuchi is past chair of the semi-annual Homeless Connect Edmonton event, a broad-based community-inspired initiative that provides services to the homeless and those at-risk of becoming homeless. In addition, he led the centre’s green program called Simple Steps, which is now part of the regional tourism industry’s FRESH initiative.
“I have had an amazing opportunity for the last 27 years,” says the retiring Fitzpatrick. “I have not worked with a finer collection of colleagues, clients and suppliers.”
Renewed as a certified green venue by the Building Owners and Managers Association in 2010, the centre is currently undergoing the LEED certification process for existing buildings. Opened in 1983 and managed by the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, the award-winning centre hosted 456,000 guests and generated $48.6 million in economic impact in 2010.
Managed by Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, the Shaw Conference Centre is one of Canada’s premier meeting, entertainment, and convention venues, and encourages socially and environmentally responsible event-planning.
