Personal Income Taxes

The Government of Canada collects taxes to get the money necessary to govern and provide services such as health care, education, and highways. Federal and provincial governments collect income taxes and sales taxes. Cities and towns collect property taxes.

In Canada, federal and provincial income tax is paid on all earnings. The national Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applied to retail sales, including some food items. The Provincial Sales Tax, commonly referred to as PST, is a provincial tax imposed on the consumers of most goods and particular services in a particular province.  Homeowners also pay city property taxes, based on the value of a home.

No Provincial Sales Tax (PST) in Alberta
Alberta, unlike other provinces, does not have a provincial sales tax on purchased goods and services.

Edmonton’s taxes are lower than most cities.
