Arts and Culture
Edmonton was named Canada’s Cultural Capital in 2007. Main reasons for that honour include:
- Known as Edmonton Festival City, we host more than 30 annual festivals through the year. Several are world-renowned — and all are good fun.
- Our Downtown Arts District includes major performance venues. The Winspear Centre concert hall is considered one of the best concert facilities in the world.
- The city has a fine symphony orchestra, opera company, ballet, and dance companies.
- Edmonton has more playhouses per capita than any other city in Canada, offering everything from classic to contemporary work.
- There are 60-some art galleries here. Edmonton’s Gallery Walk was the first of its kind in Canada.
- This city buzzes with artistic activity, from independent, original music to experimental theatre, and all kinds of other creative modes. There are venues for jazz, rock, and folk music.

- Old Strathcona is a historic area dating from the 19th century. Today it’s a center of unique shops, bars, restaurants, and live theatre.
- Virtual Tourist provides a comprehensive list of attractions and activities. It’s meant for visitors of course, but it’s helpful for Edmontonians, too.
